The Rapier class Escort represents a balance between the more traditional design philosophy of the Saber class, and the more radical-looking Andorian-inspired Ushaan class. The Rapier class was designed by staff from the Starfleet Corps of Engineers who served on the older U.S.S. The Saber-class of Federation starship was first introduced in the late 24th century, and was in full service by 2373.The ship featured a design more compact than other Starfleet vessels, and was fairly well armed despite its small size; the class has featured prominently in the Battle of Sector 001 against the Borg and in the Dominion War. The TX-130 Saber-class fighter tank, simply known as the TX-130, the Saber fighter tank, or the Saber, was a light, quick-strike repulsortank used by the Galactic Republic during the Clone Wars and later the Galactic Empire and Alliance to Restore the Republic during the Imperial Era.

DescriptionEdit

The TX-130 Saber-class fighter tank was a light repulsortank manufactured by Rothana Heavy Engineering. The TX-130 was considered quick and nimble for an armored fighting vehicle, and was able to enter a fight quickly, give significant damage, and escape unharmed. In that capacity, it was sometimes compared to the Delta-7 Aethersprite-class starfighter.[1]

The TX-130 was equipped with a versatile complement of weapons. Their primary weapons were a pair of fire-linked heavy laser cannons mounted to the hull. The cannons had a fixed forward firing arc, although, they could easily be brought to bear on enemy targets due the the TX-130's agility. The TX-130 was also equipped with either a twin medium laser cannon turret atop the tank, or a Taim & BakKB-50a beam cannon. The TX-130 also made use of rapid fire ordnance launcher mounted on each of the vehicle's sponsons. TX-130 tanks were outfitted with lightweight ablative armor, allowing it to defend itself against light anti-vehicle weapons and increase its survivability, which was supplemented by a quick-cycling shield generator.[1]

RoleEdit

The TX-130 was designed to provide infantry support, engage light enemy armor, and escort allied forces. TX-130 used their mix of versatile weapons to give their Republic Military and Jediofficers tactical flexibility. They were also used for anti-armor and anti-fortification roles with their heavier armament. A group of TX-130 Saber-class fighter tanks was referred to as a squadron, while another sized group was referred to as a platoon.[1]

HistoryEdit

Used early in the Clone Wars by the Galactic Republic's Grand Army, the TX-130 Saber-class fighter tank was utilized against the Separatist Alliance. During the Clone Wars, the fast TX-130 tanks were used to frightening effect, and clone trooper units were at times saved by the arrival of a squadron. Due to the fighter tank's great mix of speed and firepower, the tank was popular among clonetroopers and tank crews.[1]

When the Republic transformed into the Galactic Empire,[2] the TX-130 continued into service with the Imperial Army. During the Imperial Era, the TX-130 also came into possession of the Rebel Alliance, whose commanders placed high demand for, and the Alliance tried to expand its inventory with operational tanks and salvaged hulls. Mercenarycompanies also used TX-130 tanks.[1]

Lists of Star Trek spacecraft is a comprehensive breakdown of the spacecraft featured in the Star Trek franchise.

Introduction[edit]

From a production point of view, the first Star Trek spacecraft was featured in the late 1960s science-fiction show Star Trek, the USS Enterprise (NCC-1701) which was introduced in 1966. That show introduced a number of other vessels of the fictional Federation and especially aliens, one of the famous of these was the Klingon D-7 starship. Original studio models of these are held at the U.S. Smithsonian Institution's National Air and Space Museum,[1] and the show is famous for inspiring engineering and scientists, and is also known for multi-cultural crews.

A few other well-known related starships are the USS Enterprise (NCC-1701-D), from Star Trek: The Next Generation of the 1980s and 1990s, spawning the TNG-era trilogy of films and shows. This era produced many new Star Trek ships and spacecraft, and for the first time started in the 1990s a transition from miniature models to computer generated images. Many of the models for authentic starship models are a popular item at auction, and can go for hundreds of thousands of dollars. Some well-known Star Trek spacecraft include:

  • In the original series (aired 1966–1967), the USS Enterprise (NCC-1701)
  • In The Next Generation (aired 1987–1994), the USS Enterprise (NCC-1701-D)
  • In 'Deep Space Nine (aired 1993–1999), the Deep Space Nine (fictional space station)
  • In Star Trek Voyager (aired 1995–2001), the USS Voyager

One of the most well-known non-Federation ships is the 'Bird of Prey', which was crewed by Captain Kirk and his crew in the 1986 film Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home. This also provides an example of the creative alien spaceship design, as the film featured an extremely large black cylinder for the 'whale probe', unlike the typical 'warp drive' ships like the Enterprise.

The Star Trek universe also included a large number of shuttlecraft, which although small compared to the large vessels was typical place for dialogue between 2–3 characters in a large number of episodes of these shows.

Listing[edit]

The fictional Star Trek universe includes several spacegoing species and groups:

  • Starfleet starships (this listing includes the ships like Kirk's Enterprise)
  • Jem'Hadar starships (DS9)
  • Kazon ship classes (Voyager)
  • Romulan starships (includes the Romulan Warbird of TNG)
  • Xindi starships (ENT)
