Outlook Crashes When Opening Email

So I'm running windows 7 and just installed dual monitors. I need to have Outlook open on one monitor and use the other for other applications. But when I click anything in Outlook to open it it always goes to the other monitor. Is there any way around this? I know many people say that Windows 'remembers' where you close an application or window and will open that type of window in the same place. That seems to work with everything except my emails and Outlook!

Has anyone conquered this problem before or know where to start?

I was just researching the exact issue.

I opened outlook on the primary monitor and dragged it to the second monitor. Each time I opened an individual email from the secondary monitor, the email opened on the primary.

So, what I did was:

  1. I had outlook opened on my secondary monitor and the email opened on the primary. I wanted the individual email to open on the secondary.
  2. I dragged the open email from the primary over to the secondary and closed the invidividual email. Windows 7 remembered that action.

Now, the outlook application and each individual email open on the seconday.

Don't have the window maximized (just restored, or you can't move it), then move it to where you want it, the hold SHIFT and close it. You probably do not need the SHIFT key, but that is a common way for Microsoft to REALLY save a location. Then test.

You could use Display Fusion. I use it with my dual-monitor setup and it works really well. It even has an option for you to specify which monitor programs open in.

Hi Daniel,

From your post, I learnt that you have given some efforts to fix the issue, like using Outlook safe mode, creating a new profile, etc. But the issue persists. Firstly, I’d like to suggest you try the steps below to see if the issue can be resolved:
Check and update Outlook client to the latest version by clicking FILE->Office Account->Office Updates.

If the issue persists, I’d like to collect the following information for further investigating:

1. When did the issue occur? Do any other users in your organization encounter the same issue?
2. How did you set up the Office 365 account on the Outlook 2010, via Exchange, POP or IMAP?
3. Could you provide us with your detailed Outlook client version? To check the detailed version, click FILE->Office Account in Outlook client, the detailed version number will list under Office Updates.
4. Is your operating system the latest version? If not, please update it to see if the issue persists.
5. About “if I delete the 2 OST files then open outlook it recreates them. they are exactly the same size and name”, do you mean the issue still persists after recreating the OST files?
6. Do you encounter any issues when using OWA(Outlook Web App)?
7. When the Outlook client crashing, is there any error message? If yes, please share corresponding screenshots with us for analysis. To upload screenshots, click Use rich Formatting in this thread and select Insert/Edit Media.

We appreciate your time and continued efforts.
